At first sight of the Fluid Motor Union – Project X the deal was sealed!

Possibly the craziest BMW transformation we’ve ever seen, this build all started years ago. We had always wanted to build an offroad X5 but at first sight of the Fluid Motor Union Project X, the deal was sealed. The FMU lads picked up a v8 E53 as a wreck, fixed it up, chucked some muddies on it, a 3″ lift, some bar-work, a snorkel and damn it looked the goods! After seeing some incredible shots of this fire breathing beast we started scouring the auctions to embark on our own E53 project.

Not long into our search we came across a 3.0 Petrol E53 with a manual transmission. This vehicle had suffered from a wiring fire in the rear half of the cabin however it was not listed on the Written Off Vehicle Register. A repair shop had purchased all of the parts required to get it back on the road but had passed it in to auction when they discovered how badly the wiring loom was damaged. We picked it up for $4k and within 24 hours we had it running and back on the road. We set to work and deleted the rear mufflers to give it a bit of a growl and dropped nearly 40kg off the weight of the vehicle.

Not having a lot of faith in the 4×4 system of the BMW and having seen the Top Gear episode where they state that these vehicles couldn’t even drive up a wet grassy hill, we chucked some 33″ muddies on some steelies, fitted them up and headed to the sand dunes to prove them wrong.

“The little x5 did so well that we welded up a moto rack for the back of it and headed back out for a weekend of fun the following week”

The perfect toy hauler!
Scouting some lines to test the capabilities of the X5 was just as fun as driving them!
The soft sand hill climbs proving a challenge for the much newer land cruiser tagging along, the bog stock X5 proved much more capable than even we had expected.
